Hello Kitty Link

Hello all - a very funny Hello Kitty post is coming up next. First I must pray for sunshine so I can take photos. But in the meantime, here is a Hello Kitty Thing you must all see. Then come back and tell me your reaction. But be nice - remember, we have readers from all over the world here, some of whom like Hello Kitty. (And actually, I personally don't have anything against her. I am confused about how she has no mouth, yes, but I don't dislike her - I just am not keen on pink).

  1. I guess I don't "get" the "Hello Kitty" thing, but I do think the idea of a themed hospital is kind of weird, and yet oddly appealing.

  2. I don't think that hello kitty would have been a great sorce of comfort for me while giving birth, it would have been annoying(too much pink), but with that said, hospitals annoy me anyway, I had my last two babies at home, which was the greatest sorce of comfort I could ask for besides my husband(who wasn't all that helpful, he said that not me).

  3. How odd! I guess I'm generally supportive of any attempts made to 'de-hospitalise' maternity wards, making them friendlier and more comfortable places to give birth in, but I'm not sure how welcome "people in feline costumes" would have been had they encountered me in the throes of labor ;) Also not a fan of pink.

I really like your blog. I only discovered it recently but I've read though all your old posts. You've made some fantastic stuff for your kids. Mine particularly liked our knock off ikat bag cardboard mailbox.

  4. Ha, really funny. I'm glad my little boy didn't come wrapped to me in a hello kitty blanket. Even if it was blue I'm sure my husband would have yanked it off of him. Too girly! Thanks for sharing the article.

  5. If I was going to give birth in a hospital themed around a cartoon character with no mouth, then I'd have to opt for a Moomin hospital experience. There's nothing quite like Swedish acid induced pink and blue hippoland. I'd want all the nurses dressed as Lilla My.

  7. Wow...I am a Canadian who lives in Taiwan, and I was aware that Hello Kitty had her own restaurant in Taipei and shops devoted to solely selling Hello Kitty merchandise, but the hospital is news to me!

She definitely has a huge following here, although Spongebob is gaining in popularity, esp with my students.
I am not a fan of pink either - I have nothing against her - but if I were to have a baby here, I think being ensconced in a Hello Kitty environment might increase my anxiety. ;)

  8. I actually like Hello Kitty more than most commercial characters but I don't get this or really any non pediatric theme decorated hospital. It would make me feel like I was giving birth in my daughter's bedroom and I think things could get ugly (on my part) once I entered transition and a woman wearing a giant kitty picture was trying to get me to focus.

  9. Too much pink! And I have some doubts as to feeling less pain simply by looking at Hello Kitty.

  10. He he. Words failed me when I first read the article. And that doesn't happen often.

Jen: Welcome! We still have our big old cardboard mailbox, too. Although it's been used as a library book chute and other things. If you like cardboard stuff, you must go visit Kitten Muffin at Filth Wizardry. Click on her link two comments below yours. Ah, I covet her cardboard creations on a very regular basis.

KM: Hadn't heard of Moomin - so went and Wiki-ed it. Fun! Nurses embodying a "fierce and determined" character - oh my!

I think if I had to do my births again, I'd want a hospital with a built-in craft room in each birthing room. Stocked with ikat. Or felt. And a big Costco-vat of cardboard, and an endless supply of masking tape and a hot glue gun. All those long boring labor hours wasted not making something! Then when I brought our babies home, I could say, "hey, look at litte Emily! And also this tote and cool cardboard lawnmower-cum-laptop-cum-telescope I made while waiting!"

  11. My goodness. It looks like a bubble gum factory. I'm not anti-HK by any stretch, but I can't imagine having her huge, mouthless face staring up at my from my bedsheets as I give birth. I believe I'd have to ask for narcotics.

  12. Well, to each her own, but it would have driven me nuts as I'm not a Kitty fan! Would have been fine in the nursery.

  13. I guess I'm the only one who wouldn't mind giving birth there. I'm not a huge Hello Kitty fan, but those aprons are cute! And the bassinets, and the little vanity in the room?

That said, I really dislike the director's presumptuous ideas about the "pain and fear" associated with giving birth. And worse, he thinks Hello Kitty is going to somehow make things easier? Thank you, no. I'll bring my midwife with me instead.

  14. It's like my four and five year old daughters got together with some Taiwanese doctors to create a hospital. That is too funny!

They are firm believers in the healing powers of Hello Kitty. Exhibit A.
