Germ Warfare

A quick and silly paper craft this morning before breakfast - Germs.

We cut some shapes out of construction paper

and let the girls add eyes, mouths, teeth -

which even a two-year-old could sort of stick in the right spots (bravo!).

And if some small persons were a bit heavy on the glue,
it was perfectly appropriate, given the subject matter.

A cardboard stand (we cut up an old Ritz cracker box)

stuck to the backs of the germs

and we had a whole army of the wretched creatures.

Which meant war.

So we stretched a rubber band across the legs of an overturned chair,
cut the remnants of the cracker box into ammunition

took aim-

and then remembered the smallest members among
us would be better off with hand-hurled boulders
then faced the enemy

and wiped them all out.

Then all headed back in for morning victuals.

Suddenly Emily runs out with a toy pump bottle, and squirts
us all vigorously. "Hand sanitizer! You've been handling germs!"

I should've thought of that earlier!
Before we got all bashed up in the battle!
The wisdom of children - always leaves the grownups
(me, anyway) looking decidedly daft.

  1. I wish I was your kid! Your girls (and you!) have toooo much fun! :)

I literally laughed out loud when I saw the... er... extra-gluey guy. ;)

  2. LOL! That is such a cute and funny little idea!

  3. This is such a cute Idea. I love your makeshift catapult.

  4. How I wish I was one of your children! They get to have so much fun!!! Lucy x

  5. what a fun and talented and creative woman and mom you are! My little ones love destruction so I am definately going to steal this idea! Thanks for sharing!!

  6. Just shaking my head and laughing! Loved the hand sanitizer comment - children are truly smart.

  7. I am totally doing this today. My 3 year old and I have both had colds back to back this last couple weeks and she has been interested in germs. Thanks for posting :o).

  8. This is FABULOUS! I'm saving this for the next "we're all sick and set on whining endlessly" day. Thanks, LiEr! =)

  9. So great idea! Especially the catapult. Thanks for sharing it, we'll make it! :)

  10. Oh my. I have some kids who would love this!

  11. Hello!

I tried your idea with the children last weekend and it was great! They loved it to design the monsters and had a lot of fun, when they shoot em up!

Thank you for sharing your ideas!

  12. These are great! They look like so much fun! Last weekend my cousin(4) and I built your catapult and then that inspired a castle. In a couple of weeks when I go back up to visit them, I will indeed have to try this!

  13. We made these for our afterschool program. Kids had to say one way to stay healthy and then they got a chance to shoot the germs. The more germs they knocked down the bigger a prize they got (from fruit leather to juice boxes and granola bars) They loved it and actually lined up to think of ways to keep healthy!

Thank you for talking to me! If you have a question, I might reply to it here in the comments or in an email.
