It's fleece. Not wool. Backed with regular light fusible interfacing. Saw it in person the other day. Mum was with me in the store, so we turned it inside out and studied the construction and investigated the interfacing. It's a classic style - so it's straightforward. I am going to make this for the girls this winter fall. Or maybe just the single-breasted variation, so I can do some slant welt pockets instead of these inseam ones. The one in the store wasn't lined (why???) but when I make them, they will be.
I want to make myself a warm wool winter coat. None of the "wool" coats in the stores are thick enough or warm enough. I'm a small person. I could easily wear a girls' size but they seem to be even thinner.
ReplyDeleteOne of these days...
I'll be watching to see how yours turns out!
j'aimerai pouvoir en faire un comme ça aussi...
ReplyDeletebonne couture!!
j'ai hâte de voir le résultat!!
Could you do it at as a sew along? I'd love it broken down into all the steps you would take. Please please pretty please!?
ReplyDeleteI'd like one for me! Are you going to draft your own pattern? Your girls are very lucky!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I have one like tthis in orange color.Mine is lined.I'm interested how will your turn out!
ReplyDeleteyes, I've seen it and it got my creative wheels turning. . . but then I was reading yesterday how much better wool is than fleece. . .just grind my wheels till I see what you do!
ReplyDeleteLove the coat. Would love it even more in adult sizes, but it does look awfully darn adorable on the wee ones. Good luck with the sewing!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty. I plan to make my dd a jacket this fall as well.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could copy Lands' End clothes! That's my favorite place to get them. I have a couple of their fleece jackets. They're not lined, either. I don't think it's necessary... more comfy/snuggly without it. What would you line it with?
ReplyDeleteThis is a very lovely coat for a girl! I have similar vintage patterns, single- and double breasted, and I plan to make one for my little one for this winter too. I even planned to make it with a fleece fabric, I think it's not only less expensive, it's also washable and therefore easier to keep clean.
ReplyDeleteI ralised that many garments in stores aren't lined, maybe to save production costs?
I look forward to see the finished coat! Kind regards from Switzerland, Doris
Oh I've made a few jackets with fleece! It's so easy to sew. A year ago I realized my daughter didn't have any fall-weight outer things so I made something in one naptime -- just a drop-sleeve hoodie with big buttons but a fun print. She wore that to death.
ReplyDeleteThis year I plan on going a step further and lining the polyester fleece with sweatshirt knit for more warmth and a bit more longevity through the of winter where she'll only be in the car. I love unventing stuff in the store or in catalogs because it helps me feel like my kids still look current in their homemade clothes.
Oooo, I wish I was skilled enough to sew this without a pattern or sample to trace. That would be a great winter coat for my daughter!

ReplyDeleteGrandma G, I love Land's End for kids too! And their bags! And shoes! I think I'd line mine with flannel. But even with the lining, it would be a fall coat in these parts. In the real winter, we'd have to walk around wearing a portable space heater strapped to ourselves, wouldn't we?
I wish I could wear Lands' End shoes, because they're so cute. Unfortunately, they don't come in narrow sizes. :( LE jeans for Courtney were her all-time best fitting!
ReplyDeleteFlannel in the sleeves, too? Might that make it harder to slip on over long sleeves? Just thinkin'....
Yeah, we'll need that space heater again before we know it. Too bad we couldn't bottle up the heat we've had for the past week and recycle it this winter!
Enjoy today's 'cooler'!!
(P.S. Lands' End misplaced the apostrophe, not me! ;) )
I hope you post about it - I've had a fleece coat like this in mind for my son for a while but I'm afraid to take the plunge without some guidance (or at least a good example). We have very few days in Central Texas where we need a heavy coat, so a lined fleece would be just about the right weight for my kiddo. For us, this would be a winter coat.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter had one last year of heavy jersey (sweatshirt?) fabric and I saved it so I could try and recreate it in a bigger size. It was so cute.
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to make this coat for my 3 daughters. If you possibly have the time or energy to do a tutorial / description, I would be grateful!!
ReplyDeleteso cute! please put you pattern up and a tutorial when you make this!
