Each time I'm back in Singapore, I feel less and less the need to stock up on sewing stuff to bring home to Minnesota. I'm not sure whether I'm glad or not about this. On the one hand, it's indicative that I'm increasingly settled here, and more knowledgeable of places to buy the supplies and materials I need. On the other hand, it might mean that I don't hold in as high esteem, my old hunting ground(s) from the exciting(er) sewing days of my youth.
On this recent trip, for instance, I didn't buy any fabric. I realized that I barely touched the fabric I bought on my last trip there. I also had a very short shopping list, comprising mostly hardware and electronic components for other hobbies. All that said, it was still extremely enjoyable to browse and pick up loads of random Might Be Usefuls and Oh How Quaints and Cheaper Heres and other general nonsense. Here are some samples of what I brought home.
At Textile Centre, my favorite wholesale haberdashery mall (for want of a better word - there are only four really relevant stores there), I bought velcro - indigo, raspberry, dandelion, charcoal, peacock and sky (the lighting isn't accurate);
polka-dot bias tape - yes, I can make my own,
but for just over US$1 a card..... duh!
(and I've already used one on my hamper);
but for just over US$1 a card..... duh!
(and I've already used one on my hamper);
thick grosgrain binding for wallets and bags;
satin-y ric rac - the wavy ones are about US$3.50 and the straight ones are about US$4.80. For 36 yards. 36!!!
I haven't been able to find the straight trims here in the US, incidentally. So I buy them whenever I'm in Singapore,
to make frog buttons like these;
elastic by the card (about US$1.70 for 12 yards) and fold-over elastic in multiple colors, widths and textures - the ivory one in the photo has a velvet finish.
random notions - grease/wax pencils, chalk pencils, machine needles, and chalk markers. The Pfaff bobbins were bought cheap online, in bulk, by Dad and Mum, who gave me just part of their shipment.
I've only ever used actual chalk chunks, but this plastic adaptation is much neater. You slide out the compartment that's filled with powdered chalk (comes in yellow, white, blue and pink) and remove the stopper lid, then replace the chalk compartment.
See that tiny little toothed wheel at the tip?
It dispenses a fine line of chalk - much more precise and the roller action is better than the sliding method of the traditional chalk/markers because the fabric doesn't shift and produce skipped/feathery lines. I'm planning to grind up my old tailor's chalk fragments for refills.
And then there's Daiso. Always a lot of fun, Daiso-, especially if you go there only once every year or two. Between Daiso and the independently-owned stationery stores in the various housing estate strip malls, a person can bring home an entire suitcase of Cuteville without a strain on the pocket.
Here's a fun little pill shaver - it removes fuzzy bits from fabric surfaces.
See?
Some bento accessories - toothpicks:
Little pop-up (and squish-down) drinking cups for kids:
Teeny little food cutters:
Paper embosser:
Binder clips:
And then there were the gifts from friends!
Check out these mittens uh, I mean gloves (duh) my friend Eunice got for Kate. Bought, since Eunice doesn't knit. But -eeeek - that toadstool!!!
Polka-dot webbing (thanks, J!)
Personalized font fabric. Eeeeeeeee!
So much potential!
She prints these for her art folios.
Aren't they brilliant?
Kaftan blouse made by Jen. Drapey and gorgeous!
Made of one rectangle and two seams.
Hand-stitched, except for the rolled-hem edge finishing.
And Auntie Laura made these butterfly hair clips for the girls:
There's more, but I started to feel guilty making you all feel left out like this. So let's move on to the giveaways! There are TWO giveaways, so read carefully.
Giveaway #1:
While I was out shopping, I thought of you guys. Yes, I did! I thought I'd put together a little package of things that reminded me of this trip, and send it out to one of you:
- Two expandable cups
- Eight binder clips
- Food picks
- Drafting pencil
- That fancy chalk marker
- A set of blank peekaboo cards you can use with your surplus stickers.
- Three one-yard lengths of trim:
Giveaway #2:
It's funny how every single friend or family member who made plans to meet us would ask what food they could bring on their visit. Never magazines, or books, or toys. It's always food, because it's a fact that Singaporeans out of the country miss their food. Someone once said that if a Singaporean overseas claims to miss family more than food, they're liars. Definitely some truth in that.
Being back in Singapore (and Asia in general) also reminds me of cute food. Like bento-cute. This was the girls' bento lunch one day last week, just for fun. I don't do bento lunches often, so that when I do, it's super-extra novel and thrilling for the girls. OK, those Doritos aren't exactly healthy, but well. Those white things are coconut cookies, incidentally. They're Chinese New Year staples back in Singapore (and Malaysia). We call them kueh bangkit.
If bento is new to you, here are some reasons to try it:
- It's fun - both for the person preparing it, and the one eating it.
- It encourages picky eaters to eat what they don't usually like e.g. vegetables.
- It encourages picky eaters to try new foods introduced and presented in an interesting way.
- The portions are controlled (since they're packed in a box, and often in compartments therein) so you can't overeat.
Need more inspiration? Here are some ideas from Bento USA, which stocks an awesome variety of bento tools, boxes and accessories and has ongoing promotions, giveaways and contests. Go visit their store, their Facebook page or sign up for their twitter feed to be kept updated.
JeeJee at Bento USA is giving away some three bento items (valued at $30) on ikatbag to get you started on your bento meals! Thank you, JeeJee!
Here they are:
Set of bento plate cutters and rice mould
Two-tiered panda bento lunchbox
Animal food picks
And Bento USA and I will ship internationally, so anyone in the world can enter!

I'd most like to visit.... Hmm, that's a hard question. We'll say Singapore so that I could meet up with you on your next visit. :-D Otherwise, I'm not really a "travel the world" type person...
ReplyDeleteAwesome giveaway! I love those pop up cups!

at the first chance i get, the country i'd like to visit most is spain. my husband lived there for 2 years, so i'd love to go where he went and see what he saw.
ReplyDelete"At the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is..... (and tell me why)"
ReplyDeleteAustralia -- because I recently met a man from down under which re-ignited an interest in all things Australian, and I've been following Inner Pickle who lives in Australia.
BTW, I'd love the 1st give away most, but either would be fun. Do I get special consideration for being the first comment? How about if I tell you my birthday is the first week of March? LOL!
You are a generous soul LiEr!
ReplyDeleteAt the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is... France (especially Paris)! After years and years of taking French Immersion (here in Canada), I'd like to put some of those French language skills to use, as I live in a predominantly non-French speaking part of the country - plus I think I'd impress my kids immensely (or bring shame upon them, depending how atrocious my French has become). O Paris, je t'adore!
This giveaway rocks!! If I were to venture abroad I'd like to go see where my mother and her family grew up - Poland/England, etc. I really should try to get there some day, but family of 7 makes it hard. :-)
ReplyDelete...Holland. It's where I'm from and I haven't been there in a very long time. Too long.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Hanneke
New Zealand - to go just because it is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteIf you come you can visit me! :-)
DeleteI follow you quietly for a few time and these gifts are very very intersting, I'd like to try to win if you accept players from France ;-)
ReplyDeleteThks in advance and congratulations for your beautiful blog!
At the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is..... Japan, because my boyfriend and I love that country, culture, art. We want to travel there when we get married, and I want this to happen soon.

ReplyDeleteAt the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is Finland. I've always had a thing for Scandinavian design and love the (bizarre) language which I studied at university.
ReplyDelete...the Philippines! My husband was born in Manila and still has a half-brothere there. I would love to visit such a beautiful country and meet extended family!

Ooh, such cute stuff! I've been thinking about getting bento boxes for the girls' lunches -- they've commented sometimes about what all i put in the same baggy! I think I'd love filling a bunch of little compartments.
ReplyDelete...Russia. I almost studied abroad there for a semester, but opted to get married instead (who can blame me?). I have dear friends in Moscow that I haven't seen in 10 years. And have you ever seen Russian textiles?!
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm #1!
ReplyDeleteAt the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is Scotland, Ireland, France, Netherlands, Australia... do I have to pick just one? Why don't we just say Europe and be done with it. Why? There's just so much history there. I get a real kick from walking the streets where others walked hundreds of years ago and imagining what it must have been like, and then thanking my lucky stars to live in a time with indoor plumbing. Thanks for the giveaways!

At the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is Japan! I love this country, their art, history, food and fabrics... and of course, sushis!! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for this lovely giveaway! :)
This is a hard one. Can I pick one I have to been to already, if so I would pick Malaysia, again. I have been there 3 times but it has been over 6 years since I have been. Each time I went it was for work and I worked 12 hour days, I did get a chance to sight see but not as much as I liked. I did not have kids yet and I was not into crafting and sewing, so shopping would be more like your Singapore giveaway. I loved the people there, the food was so good (fruit especially), shopping (great prices) and it is so beautiful there, so much different then Boise. I wish I could take my whole family there some day. Thanks for the chance to win.

"At the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is..... "
ReplyDeleteJapan, because they have craft supplies I only dream about here in the States.
My daughter just lost her bento box and we feel it's loss keenly everyday at lunchtime -- well, I feel it's loss in the morning when I make the lunch 'coz now I have to find baggies and wraps to hold my kid's food. So much less fun than the cute box.
At the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is pretty much anywhere in Asia. I have traveled to Europe which I loved but I would love to visit Asia. So many of the places there, the lifestyle and culture is so very different from my own, I would love to experience it.
ReplyDeleteAnd Bento lunches are wonderful! I love how you punched out the cheese into the flower shapes!
So glad you're back!! Thanks for the great giveaway, I'd love to win either!
ReplyDelete"At the first chance I get, the country I'd most like to visit is...Canada" I know, not so much with the cultural variety, but I'd love the chance to do some hiking in the canadian rockies.

ReplyDeleteAt the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is China, at the moment. My sister is living there, I miss her, and I think it would be an amazing experience.
ReplyDeleteBut, after reading your blog, Singapore is very high on the list. Mike does collaborative research with a couple professors in Singapore, and I have this dream of us all spending a few months over there. Mike thinks I'm nuts to want to live in a tiny apartment for a few months with four kids, and I'm sure he's right, but I'm equally certain it would be fabulous =)

At the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit (again) is Morocco. I love the food (I need a good tagine!), the culture, the spices, the variety in the country. I'd love to take my children to see the sun rise over the Sahara desert and drive through the snow covered Atlas Mountains. I'd love to take them to see the snake charmers in Marakech and swimming off the coast in Agadir. I did a ton of traveling before I married and had children—I think anyone can benefit by spending time in a foreign country/culture. And I want to give my children the opportunity to see how others live, share, eat, and play.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the awesome giveaway and for sharing your travel fun!

Thanks for sharing all the fun stuff from Singapore. Just the mention of a hawker center (in a previous post of yours) got my mouth watering. Must go back sometime.
At the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is England, Ireland, or Italy. England because I just think it would be neat. :) Ireland because it's supposed to be beautiful (and I have some Irish blood). Italy because I like Italian food. :) But I'm so not into riding a plane or a boat to another country (or serious trip-taking in general), so I'm not holding my breath for those trips. :)

The weather is just a bit nicer than over here (in Germany) and I love the food, the vivaciousness of the people, ... If I could pick any place in the world, then it's Japan for cherry blossom season. Because I had the chance to visit for plum blossom season for a couple of days last year, and I'd love to explore some more!

At first chance the country I'd like to visit most is Austria. I've been to Salzburg-once for 6 hours in pouring rain, and swore I'd return. The hills really were alive with the sound of music- so beautiful and inspiring. In fact, the man who I eventually married heard me say that before we were dating and bought me an awesome guide book of Austria, so that one day when I got there I'd be prepared. 7 years and 2 kids later, those plans have been on hold, but we will get there one day! ellatriveri@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteWow... just reading all the comments here is so inspirational! At the first chance I get, the country I would like to visit is Denmark. I have always been enamoured with Northern Europe lifestyle and maritime history. I also just learned some of our family originated in Sweden and Denmark. As if I needed another reason!

At the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is Argentina, South America. I was there a long time ago, as a teen, traveling with my youth drama group, and I always felt like I wasn't able to explore the way I would if I was on my own. Plus, I'm older now, more willing to eat different foods and wiser about what I would have bought at the markets and elsewhere. I want to find that loose tea I had (so GOOD!) and that dulce de leche on biscuits (heaven!) and the markets.... Someday.. someday I'll go back! Love those little trinkets and I admit, those binder clips sent my heart fluttering! So silly.. binder clips?!?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fun!

if i could go anywhere it would be to Sweden. My great grandparents were immigrants, processed through Ellis Island. For some reason my great grandfather changed his last name and it hasnt been easy to trace family history.

Squeee!! I was just pinning like mad from the BentoUSA site - only to find it here, too!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think that I'd most like to visit Ireland or Norway. I have cultural connections to both, and they both interest me as being different from where I live. I like green things and castles. And I like lefse and fjords. But not hot. Heat and I don't do well.
I'd like to visit New Zealand because my grandparents both agreed it was the most beautiful place they'd been to after many years of travel together. It doesn't take much more than a recommendation, I'd really go anywhere.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway, and the fabulous blog.

Hi Lier,
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaways, but I'm not interested in either because I'm going to Singapore very soon for a gorge-fest :P (That comment about (ex)Singaporeans missing Singaporean food? 100% accurate.)
Could you please tell me where Textile Centre is in Singapore? TOTALLY need to spend a whole morning there. Oh, and also, where is Daiso?
Thanks heaps!
Sarah Pringle :)
At the first chance I get, I'd go to Japan. I'd like to indulge my son in his train fixation, pick up more bento supplies (since I make him sorta bentos), get my husband out to a real vacation where he can't do anything but be in the moment. I'd also hope that I get a chance to pick up some decades old biological samples so my bf can finish writing that last paper from his former advisor. Love the blog, and it's been lovely to be reading and incorporating some of your ideas into reality, and having it rev up some creative juices in my own mental noodle.
ReplyDelete...Italy, because I studied art in grad school and I want to see the light shining through the Pantheon. Oh, and eat some ( a lot ) of gelato.

ReplyDeleteI have never been to Asia so I guess any of the countries in this continent will be a dream vacation! You post just "smells" like the magic of the east, how I wish I could go there…
It could also be amazing if you'll post someday recommendations for places to go and see while you are in Singapore (other than the obvious ones of course) - that way if I will be able to live my dream I'll be prepared
Thanks so much!

ReplyDeleteFor 21 years I was a Flight Attendant for American Airlines. I've lost count of how many countries' airports I've been in. Three years ago I took an early retirement package, and - because I am a wife and mother - I have never regretted that. However, there were a few places that I really wish I had made it to before I retired. And so, to answer the question, and secure a chance at winning a fabulous gift: At the first chance I get, I'd like to go to Japan. The climate is similar to what I'm used to. The language is NOTHING like what I'm used to, and my son would LOVE it because "Mainly ALL robots are made in Japan."
ReplyDelete...India! Because I worked there as a volunteer for the Girl Guides (Girl Scouts) 12 years ago, and it was an amazing, unforgettable experience, but I only got to see one area of the country - I need to go back and see more!

"At the first chance I get, the country I'd like most to visit is Scotland....it is the land from which my grandpa sailed across the seas for a new life." America is where he met my grandmother and wooed her with dancing to the radio in the middle of a country road. You see, that was the type of entertainment that was affordable in the 40's. The home he was born in is still standing on the farm where he was raised. Thanks for the interesting information that you abound with.

Canada! I was born there and the last time I went on holidays there was in 2004! (And that was my last vacation since then.) It is a big and beautiful country and we haven't seen even half of it. And the shopping there is great, much better than in the Netherlands where I live with my husband and 3 kids (Noah age 5, Kayleigh age 3 and Ryan age 9 months). We hope to be able to save enough money to visit it in 2014 when my husband and I will be married for 12 and a half years.
