My favorite neighborhood fabric store, Mill End Textiles, closed down earlier this year. I was devastated. Decided I'd have to make more pilgrimages to SR Harris, for the kind of good apparel fabric and discount designer cotton that I loved Mill End for. But SR Harris is an hour's drive away, which is decidedly inconvenient for squeezing in trips to when one is watching the clock between school bus drop offs and pick ups.
Then today, this arrived in my email inbox:
Burnsville is about 10 minutes away.
Eeeeeeeeee!
I tried not to froth at the mouth too much.
Now, that's even closer than the nearest JoAnn.
But not as close as the new Twin Cities Outlet Mall that's just opened 5 minutes away.
Where I can go shopping for clothes and stuff so that I don't have to buy fabric to sew them!
Which would leave me all sorts of time to sew stuff I really like!
For which I can go shopping at the new SR Harris!
Dressed in the RTW clothes I bought at the Outlet Mall!
That I didn't have to sew!
I'll stop gloating now.
And get back to the point of this post:
South-of-the-River Minnesotan sewing comrades, start saving your money -
there is fabric to buy and a brand new store to conquer.
I'm seeing $238RT fares from PDX to MSP for September (5hrs on Frontier). I think I am coming with my mom to see my sis in St. Paul. I've been to most of the fabric stores in your area but another visit would be cool. Do you know when the rumored new SR Harris will open?
ReplyDeleteKathy: I have no idea when they'll be open, or which part of Burnsville they'll be in.
DeleteSR Harris is a daytrip for me, living in St. Paul, but one in Burnsville isn't too scary far away. This may be bad news for my fabric stash (or good news, depending upon one's point of view...)
ReplyDeleteWahoo!! I've just moved back to MN and was so sad to see my Mill End closed.
ReplyDeleteAww... you are so lucky!!! (And 'they' need a better proffreeder. ;) )
ReplyDeleteIt's very sad when fabric stores close down. I lived in Bloomington MN many years ago and was devastated when I came back for a visit years later and there was no more Minnesota Fabrics. It used to be my favorite store.
ReplyDeleteSusan718: I'd never heard of Minnesota Fabrics, but now that I have, it's now one more store I'm sad about not being able to visit. Boo.
DeleteGreat news! I'm just barely north of the river so this is close for me too!
ReplyDeleteI just learned this for the first time last week at the BP store. I live equidistant to both locations, actually BP is a little bit closer to me. From what I understand the Burnsville location will be half the size and mostly (only) carry quilting cottons, but they will be displayed vertically (like they do at a JoAnn's etc), so you can see the fabric/color/print easier. Of course they could always change that in the future and offer different types of fabrics in Burnsville. But for me personally, I think I'll continue to shop at the BP one...
ReplyDeleteYes, I knew it would be half the size, which is still huge compared to the other stores around here. But quilting cotton!!!!!!! ARGGGGGHHHHHHH! What is the point???? Depressed now.
DeleteWait, no. The children will be in school all day so I can still drive to BP. Like I originally planned. Happy again.
I had this e-mail too ! I'm probably just in-between the 2 SR Harris, in St Louis Park, but it's exciting to have a new one anyway ! And I did not know about that outlet mall...
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to road trip to SR Harris. I'm in Iowa so it's got to be soon before the snow flies!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I need to make my way into San Francisco sometime to go shopping at a real textile store.
ReplyDeleteUgh! I was excited till I saw the post about it being mostly quilting cotton. I am a quilter but love to go to SRH for all the other fabrics for costumes, curtains, etc. I will still have to make the 50 min trip from time to time as well.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap! I live in Burnsville!!!! I can't wait!!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog and have had so much fun investigating!
