This is how tired I am

I've just made 17 buttonholes with a regular presser foot. Apparently, after more than three decades of sewing, I seem to have forgotten that

  1. you need a buttonhole foot to make buttonholes
  2. I own a buttonhole foot
  3. engaging a forward-walking foot in the reverse-stitch direction of the four-step buttonhole process isn't exactly brilliant.
I know, right?

Now, those 17 buttonholes aren't hideous, which is a miracle in itself, but they do look slightly suspicious. And you'd think that after a couple of funky-looking outcomes, I'd realize something was slightly off, but. . . no, let's just pretend we know what we're doing, why don't we?

I suppose this is only slightly less stupid than that time when I used a zipper foot to do a zig zag stitch

Anyway, I just looked at my followers widget thingy and whoa, there are almost 5000 of you. Hello, guys! In the spirit of transparency, you have a right to know that the person you're following sometimes does really dumb things.

Off to find the buttonhole foot now.

  1. Confession is good for the soul. And for a giggle sometimes. And for making other imbeciles not feel so bad about ridiculous things we've done ourselves. Thank you. Now get some sleep!! 😂😘💕

  3. Kinda nice to know that the road to perfect isn't a perfectly straight line... thanks for sharing. And sometimes it is nice to know that you can make progress even if you can't the exact tool made for that job.

  4. My mother lived with us for 12 years and was sweet, funny, forgetful, and pleasantly confused. Now, whenever I do one of those, my grown kids will pat me on the arm and say, "It's OK, Nana"!!!

    1. Pleasantly confused - aww. I often wish I could tell my kids, "Wait till you have kids yourself. I bet you won't even keep their names straight." Ha.

  8. WAIT? You need a buttonhole foot to make buttonholes? My machine does it with a regular foot.

    1. My old machine did it, too. But this was a treadle, circa who-knows-when. I loved it.

  10. I went to sew and found my bobbin plate missing?!! I know I was sewing a 4th grade play costume based on the thread on the machine, (the bobbin was also missing) and that said weird lace was causing bobbin thread balls on the machine but where could it be? I looked everywhere and finally remembered I kept my old (identical) machine to scavenge parts off of. At least my night gown has been mended...

  11. Hehehe....funny. Yeah, I did that a few times but after some hard lessons, not anymore. I have a few buttonhole feet, but I really prefer to use the chunky vintage buttonhole attachment (I own a few. :P). I've recently been practicing buttonhole making with just the regular clear embroidery foot. You know, the one with wide groove on the underside. I marked the buttonholes and used my forward/reverse, needle left/right position to manually zz stitch them. I think I'm getting better at it....sacrificing quite a number of thread spools, a worthy investment. ^_^
