Rapunzel II

Forgot to post about this till now. It's been on my dashboard for 6 weeks. Oops. The release of the new Tangled DVD reminded me. So here's this costume I made er.... two months ago:

Same old style as many of the other Halloween costumes here and here I've made the girls. Fleece from neck to toe, because of the weather here. Semi-circular skirt, fitted bodice, puff sleeves layered over inner fitted sleeves,

invisible zipper in the back.

This one was for Jenna.

Here she is, all demure

and here she is again, morphed into Old Bug Fingers (those are black olives):

Kate got to wear it, too,

in spite of it being too big.

I made two - one was a birthday present for Jenna's same-size cousin. So for a while, there were two dresses in the house, and the girls were very happy to model them for photos

and get distracted partway by bugs or something.

More recently (not that my punctuality in posting is any indication), I made even more costumes. Will share this week. I seem to only make costumes nowadays - why don't I sew normal clothes anymore? And then I mass-produce them, even. I think I must secretly enjoy making costumes more than normal clothes. Is it because my kids wear costumes more than normal clothes? Wait - I've got it! My kids think costumes are normal clothes! Ah.

  1. My kids too! It seems like good quality second hand clothes are pretty inexpensive and easy to find, where as cool costumes for little girls who have the whim to be, say, mermaids, tomorrow, are a little harder to get. So I end up brainstorming how to make mermaid tails with no money and materials on hand. Ah! Momminess.

  4. I love the fact your children think that costumes are normal clothes ... so did mine... and now one of them (as an adult) has taken up medieval sword fighting... and guess what i am now making adult costumes as well.

  10. very beautiful. I also have been on a costume kick lately. I spy little plastic princess shoes under one of those dresses... those I know well, my daughter wears them starting at 6am.

  11. these are fabulous! And those hair pieces? Genius!!! Way better than the 'real' fake hair pieces you can buy at the Disney store, which will truly get 'tangled' with everything everywhere!

  12. ooh, I love the two Rapunzels! and no reasoning neccessary, it totally makes sense that dress-up clothes would be more enjoyable to make if the kids only ever want to wear those.
Always thought it was so inspired to make the costumes from winter-weight fabrics instead of the flimsy stuff commercial ones are made of.

  13. Love the costume. My girls are living in their costumes, too. My big one gets out of her school uniform and into a costume as soon as she gets into the door.

  24. Not one but two Rapunzels! I just adore your ideas. You all must have a fantastic time creating and playing. And how many hands do you have 1. to sew elaborate costumes 2. to cook 3. to clean the house 4. to do other chores and 5. to go around your business? Five pairs of hands?

  25. LiEr, you should get yourself hooked up as a costume designer for some school! My friend is one and she is always chortling over the fabrics she has to find and the things she has to rig up. She has to do a little research, has to figure out unique problems (quick changes, etc.), and gets to show off her work to an adoring public. Seriously, this could be up your alley.

I think your photos are straightforward and good - maybe that's a comment on my photography too!
