Normally, I am a placid, unreactive sort of person (snort), but last week I read something that made my jaw drop and my fist shake, albeit at nobody in particular. I didn't want to waste even a digital photo shot of it, so here is the online version of that frightening sales flyer:
Christmas!!!!!!!!!!! Christmas fabrics!!!!!!!!!!
In JULY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know that stores need to move their stock along and get customers all excited about the next fun crafty holiday but - what - are we so desperate for winter that even Halloween/fall got bypassed???????
Tsk, tsk, Joann. Here in the midwest we LIKE the summer. We get too much winter as it is. Go away. Give us back our summer fabrics. Er... (whistling) not that I will actually be um... buying any, I mean.
Christmas fabric in July doesn't seem all that early to me. I like having the option to make big projects for Christmas. I'm much more bothered by the fact that they have the Autumn decorating stuff out already.
ReplyDeletehaha... maybe it's to give a jump start to all those project procrastinators who take forever to finish something?? Unlike me who can't stop once I start... ;)
ReplyDeleteAlthough I agree, it's pretty lame.
Hey check out my blog, I'm doing a cute GIVEAWAY today!
http://www.sew-over-it.blogspot.com/
Hey, not everybody sews as fast as you do! ;) Some of us slow pokes need to start now in order to get anything done by Christmas. lol Just so they don't put away the summer fabrics to make room for the Christmas stuff!
ReplyDeleteBut other than fabrics, I agree that the Christmas stuff appears WAY TOO SOON in the stores!!
Really, I'm sick of Christmas by the time it gets here. Ba humbug!
ReplyDeleteCount me in in the slow fabric use crowd. Last month I bought a Christmas-themed kit to make a quilt for my grandmother for Christmas. It probably won't be done until Christmas morning. So I love it!
ReplyDeleteThat's my argument for the materials. Decorations? That's something else entirely. (Unless there's an equally large group of people needing many months to get their act together for decorating?)
I'm with you all in the Sew Early For Christmas movement and the Takes Us Six Months To Get Our Presents Made group - it took me that long to make the donuts for christmas gifts two years ago. Sewed all through summer and fall, I did.
ReplyDeleteBut I still say Go Away All Reminders Of Winter. Shoo! Shoo!
I'm with you on that, LiEr, especially after last winter. It was a tough one! I've never seen such huge snowbanks on our place before. But let's not talk about that now. Yay for summer!! And it's not even (quite) half over yet! :)
ReplyDeletefor shame on Joann!!! WAY too early but I saw it too!
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's sad how hard retailers push the next season. July 5th, all the back to school supplies go out in the stores! I don't want to think of winter at all. In the Northwest, it just got to nice weather this last week.
ReplyDeleteJoanns has been doing Christmas in July as it is called for years. It is for people who start gifts early and for those who sell handmade items for Christmas.
ReplyDeletehihihi... they are crazy... I'm glad it's finally summer I don't want to think of the winter yet...
ReplyDeleteSadly, Hobby Lobby has had Christmas trees since May. If you looking for anything "summer like" what little is left is 66% off. I heard my first Christmas carol commercial last week for HH Gregg. I won't be shopping there this year! It's time to let corporations and ad agencies to let up on advertising holidays that are months away.
ReplyDeleteLOL!
ReplyDeleteI feel the same reaction as you...but if I don't do my Christmas projects in the summer, they don't get done.
Fall is just too busy with school and festivities.
: )
Isn't there this "Christmas in July" movement? JoAnn must be catering to that. And let's not lay all the blame there. I was at Michaels a few weeks ago, before the 4th of July, and they were setting up for Halloween...
ReplyDeleteMy Hobby Lobby (outside of Houston) put up a couple of aisles of Christmas decorations about 3 weeks ago. And we're talking decorations, not Christmas crafting supplies. And it's about 150 degrees here. Crazy.
ReplyDeleteLOL! I know... our local quilt shop has been getting holiday prints in...Everytime I go by there I plug my ears, avert my eyes, and say "lalalala-I don't see you" until I pass the bolts. I feel cheated of the current season/holiday when I see that. Same thing happens when I see the Halloween stuff coming out at the end of the summer..... Or the holiday decorations before labor day!
ReplyDeleteI see you Christmas Fabrics and raise you Movies 24 showing ruddy Christmas Movies all through July...ARGH!
ReplyDeleteThat said I am going to buy some Christmas fabrics soon as I have an idea for making chains to decorate the house with... the girls can put them together to keep them out of my hair...erm, I mean busy!
I can see fabric stores stocking fabric early so people can start/finish projects before the holiday, but Hobby Lobby has started putting out all of their holiday decor items already! No need to decorate yet. Let's enjoy the season we are in!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I wish you lived in the mid-west - I want to have you come over and help me make slopers. I think I can do it but it would make me feel better if someone was holding my hand and spooning me Nutella while I made my first one. :)
I too HATE the holidays being pushed up. I saw Christmas stuff put out last year and HALLOWEEN hadn't even happened.
ReplyDeleteIs the celebration of the seasons no longer appreciated? Is it all about the almight dollar?
I understand sewing early...I do too...but buying clearanced at the end of the season is what that shopping is for...if not...at LEAST keep the decorations and junk put away until mid November! ;)
Honey
I noticed this also! I couldn't believe it!
